About 40 Kilometres north of Tezpur town, located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Nameri National Park is among the lesser-known wildlife habitats in Assam. Interesting fact is that this park is right next to Pakhuk, which is the Wildlife Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh. Areas of both these places if combined can measure upto 1000 square kilometres.
Consisting of dense, green and, shimmering forests like those that you see during tropical rainy season, and narrow strips of open grassland along rivers, Nameri is criss-crossed by the river Jia-Bhoroli and its tributaries. Apart from a bird watcher’s paradise with over 300 species of birds, the rivers and rapids offer exciting rafting opportunities. Nameri can be reached by road from Tezpur which is also the nearest airport while the nearest railhead is Guwahati.
